Update Week 11 Addis Ababa

20 november 2016 - Addis Ababa, Ethiopië

------------------------------------------------- English Version -------------------------------------------------

Hi readers!

Welcome to a new blog of week 11 already. We only have 9 more weeks to go.

We had a nice week in which we had an appointment with a company and we almost managed to finish the questionnaire process.

During the interview that we had at the Dutch Embassy a few weeks ago, we were brought in touch with Heineken here in Addis Ababa.  On Wednesday we finally had an appointment at Heineken for our interview. It was very interesting and useful for our research. The day didn’t end on a high note though. Due to a misunderstanding we had to pay 500 birr= 20 euro to the driver who took us to Heineken. Hope arranged a driver for us, but he either did not show up or we missed him. There was another driver from Hope standing there who pointed to another man and told us that he was our driver for the day. So, we both got into the car and took off to Heineken. When we got back at Hope the driver asked us who was going to pay, which obviously confused us as we never pay when a driver from Hope takes us to our interviews. It turned out, that the driver from Hope who pointed him out to us in the beginning did not know what he was talking about and that he was wrong about the guy being our driver. He just turned out to be a taxi driver who happened to be at the Hope compound after dropping off someone. It was a very confusing situation and I’m sure that reading about it is even more confusing lol.

This week we finally managed to get in contact with the remaining class representatives to do our questionnaires.  We had to deal with a language barrier with a few of the class representatives as some of them don’t speak good English. Luckily the student president speaks very well English and translated the conversation for us. We were able to supervise one class, but the other class representatives couldn’t manage to select students that wanted to wait for the questionnaire and some had exams. Hopefully on Monday we will get all forms filled, so we’ll be able to analyse and make questions for the focus groups.

When we wanted to print the questionnaires at the compound, the printer didn’t have a tonner. Therefore on Thursday  we went to the internet café to print them out. Prior we went out to dinner for some nice chicken sandwich at a Lebanese restaurant. The sandwich was very good, you do not only get the sandwich but also a salad and fries. Printing was more time consuming than expected.  The first internet café was appalling and kept laughing at us when we were pointing out that the internet was not working, which is weird as it is an internet café. They made us feel uncomfortable. We walked out angry while they kept laughing. The second internet café had internet but was very crowded, so there was no computer available. The third one was good and we were finally able to print out the questionnaires.

On Saturday Marieke went back home to the Netherlands. We wish you luck adapting to the cold Dutch weather girl!J Hopefully you won’t lose your nice tan too quickly.

On Friday we had a nice lady’s evening and the three of us  (us plus Marieke) got a pedicure. Our feet are still baby soft! After the pedicure we took a juice at Kaldi’s, which is the Ethiopian Starbucks. Normally, the quality is consistent but we were in bad luck this time. We tried to tell the waiter that it wasn’t a good juice, but he kept insisting that it was. Getting a new one was futile, so we left it at that. Afterwards we did some shopping. At the end of the day we wanted to get a Bajaj back to the compound, but it was rush hour. Mary managed to get one easily, but Christi had to wait a long time to get one. She therefore decided to walk to the compound which took her about 20 minutes. This wasn’t a very good idea, as she had new shoes on and she ended up with sore feet and blisters. Yikes!

We also had a nice day on Saturday. We went to Edna Mall with Rhawa, a student at Hope who turned into a good friend of ours. Rhawa if you’re reading, we love you shorty!

We had to take two taxi’s to get to Edna Mall. The taxi driver who took us halfway was very funny. He liked his music loud and liked to scream at other drivers, which would normally be scary of course but he was hilarious doing it. When we gave him the money he said that we had to give him a tip. We didn’t as we already payed more than we had to.

Prior to the movie, we went to eat some burgers at In ‘n Out. Then we went to a shop where we bought some junk food for during the movie.  In front of the cinema was a street child selling stuff. At first we thought he was holding a fluffy, but with a closer look we saw it was a real dog. The puppy was sooooo cute and small. The boy sold the puppy for only 100 Birr, which is less than 5 euro’s. We all loved the dog even Mary, who normally doesn’t like dogs at all.

After that we went back to Edna Mall and watched “Keeping  Up With the Joneses”, which was very funny! After the movie ended we wanted to watch another movie and decided to watch ‘’Fantastic Beasts and where to Find Them’’ from the author J.K. Rowling who also wrote the Harry Potter series. We loved that movie as well as it really has that Harry Potter feeling. Going back Rhawa brought us to a minibus that took us straight to the point where taxis are lined up. They always try to fill the minibuses as much as possible, which caused some men to be extremely rude by trying to sit on Mary’s lap. She refused of course. When the minibus got to its last point we took a regular taxi back. The drive took us shorter than normal as there was no traffic thankfully.

Thank you guys for reading and till next week!

Dag allemaal,

Toen we weer bij Edna Malll waren, besloten we ‘’Keeping up with the Joneses’’ te kijken. Het was een hele grappige film. Daarna wilde we nog ee film kijken en besloten we ‘’Fantastic Beasts and where to Find Them’’ van de schrijver J.K.

Good to see that you are still happy and doing well. Curious to the results of that survey!
