Update Week 15

18 december 2016 - Addis Ababa, Ethiopië

------------------------------------------------------ENGLISH VERSION------------------------------------------------------

Hi everyone!

Welcome to another update. The internet is kind of working again. Hotspot hasn’t been working anymore unfortunately, which means that we don’t have Wi-Fi in our apartment. We are now regular customers at the internet café.

Last week was Culture day in Ethiopia. Hope University celebrated it as well last Thursday. Students came to school dressed in traditional clothing and they danced on traditional music in the auditorium. At the start of the culture day, students would walk into the auditorium carrying the flag of the region they come from, followed by the students singing the national anthem. Afterwards was a play that a few students performed on how great their country is. We couldn’t understand it unfortunately as it was all in Amharic. Despite that, we have been able to enjoy the music and the traditional clothing.

Saturday last week we went to a diplomatic bazar here in Addis Ababa. There wasn’t even place to park because it was very crowded. Our driver had to drop us off somewhere so we could walk to the venue. Christi felt as if she was melting, as the que to the entrance was very long and the sun was shining very bright that day. It also took very long, because there was a lot of security. There were a lot of stands at the bazar all of them of different countries with stuff specifically of that country. The stands were mainly run by people who work for embassy’s. It was a lot of fun and we were able to enjoy foods from different countries. Unfortunately, there was no Dutch stand this year. This really disappointed Christi as she really wanted to buy Dutch cheese. A few times when Mary bought good tasting food, she would ask the person selling it  where their restaurant was located. Regrettably, most of the food that were sold, were made at the embassy. This really disappointed Mary. Christi also got Henna done on her arm. It looked really pretty, but once it dried up you couldn’t really see the design anymore as the colour turned out to be too light.

The Senegalese embassy thought Mary was one of them, which Mary secretly liked lol.

Yesterday we went to Mercato, which is a very big market here in Addis Ababa where they sell everything. Everyone thought we were crazy for going there, especially because we went alone. Some people call Mercato the ghetto of Addis Ababa where you have to be very careful as stuff always get stolen there. When we were ready to leave to the market, our neighbour told us that we were crazy which made Christi doubt about going. She intentionally left her phone at the apartment and Mary went without a bag. Christi looked like a person not to mess with. On the internet it says that Mercato is a sight worth seeing when you come to Addis Ababa, which is why were so surprised to see the condition it was in. We thought we would see beautiful stands, but that was not the case. It was very crowded and people were not watching where they were walking and driving. Christi was already ready to leave after 5 minutes.

At one moment we were approaches by a shabby looking guy from Somalia. The man said that he would help us find the way, but we kept insisting that it was unnecessary. We constantly tries to get rid of him, but the kept walking after us. He even started talking French to us, because we told him that we are from Europe (we probably shouldn’t have done that). Christi tried to stay friendly by telling him that we didn’t need him, but he kept following us. At a certain moment he finally understood that we wanted him gone and said that we had to pay him for his services. We already expected this and Mary even told Christi that he is a pirate. We didn’t want to give him a penny as he kept bothering us and we hadn’t even asked him for his ‘service’. Christi didn’t even want to buy stuff anymore, because he kept bothering us. Christi lost her patient at staying nice and almost flipped. Afterwards Mary told him that we didn’t ask him for his service and that he isn’t getting any money from us. He got angry and told us ‘you are no good people’, and then he walked away. We were finally able to shop in peace (kind of). The salespeople are very annoying and relentless and kept bothering us as well.

During our shopping, we have been able to laugh a lot while Mary was bargaining with the salespeople. Some of them were very friendly to us. While walking in the market, we heard a lot of people, mostly guys, scream ‘Nigeria’ or ‘South Africa’ to us. We thought that these are probably the only African countries they know.

On our way back, it was very difficult to find a taxi. They were either all full or they went to some other place. Fortunately we were finally able to find one. We ended our adventure with some good food. At the end we though that Mercato was not as bad as people say it is and secretly we were kind of proud of ourselves that we did it alone! Yeah, we rock!!!

We haven’t done anything special today.

We have 4 more weeks to go until our Ethiopian adventure comes to an end. Next week is Christmas, and unfortunately we do not really have the feeling that it’s the case as it’s very sunny here in Addis. The weather is also getting warmer and sunnier each day. Have a nice Sunday and till next time.

Sunny greetings from,

Mary and Christi

------------------------------------------------------NEDERLANDSE VERSIE------------------------------------------------------

Dag allemaal,

Vorige week was het ‘Culture day’ in Ethiopië.

Toen het kwart eindelijk viel, liep hij boos weg en zei hij tegen ons “you are no good people” .

Vandaag doen we niks bijzonder.
