Hi everyone!

Welcome back at one of our last blogs. Next week we will be leaving Ethiopia and we will be trading the hot weather for the cold. These past 19 weeks have gone by quickly. Christi will go to the Netherlands, while Mary will visit a few more African countries. It was Christmas here in Ethiopia last week, as they follow the Orthodox calendar. We had a good weekend.

Last week Tuesday we had a meeting at the Entrepreneur Development Centre. We asked them for help in finding clients for us for the project in March. We had a good meeting and while they are willing to help us, they need more time than we will be here. We found out that the centre trains business and that many of these companies need help with their management for example. After the meeting we had dinner at our favourite hotel. The food was good as always. Christi ordered the pasta carbonara with chicken again, while Mary tried the stuffed chicken with spinach and cheese and rice.

We’ve have been very disappointed about the quality of the food at restaurants lately. In most restaurants we order western dishes. We can advise everyone that comes to Ethiopia to only order traditional dishes in in restaurants, because they can only make those very well. If you do want good western food, you better go down town or to hotels.

Last week was Christmas here in Ethiopia, which was very noticeably when you walked on the streets. When we celebrated Christmas, there was no Christmas decoration anywhere. Last week there were decorations everywhere and a lot of stands where they sold stuff for a cheaper price. We were sad there wasn’t any of that when we celebrated Christmas. There even was a Christmas bazar at Meskel Square. We went there last Friday. It was very crowded and they sold a lot of stuff. We both went back with leather bags and a few other things.

On our way back we wanted to take the metro for the first time. Mary thought that we coyld buy thickets in the metro, which was not the case. We walked all those stairs up (they were A LOT) to find out that we had to buy the tickets downstairs. We weren’t in the mood to take the stairs again, so we took a line taxi.

It was very crowded on our way back. We didn’t even reach our destination when the driver told us to get out. Everyone stayed put of course, as we paid for the trip. We told him to keep driving, which he did. Then he dropped us someplace else and demanded that we got out. Mary got angry and got into a discussion with him. We decided to get out, but the driver kept insulting us. Christi stayed calm until the driver called us ‘monkies’. She exchanged some words with him to which he started to spit on her. If it were up to us we would never take these line taxi’s again.

As we already mentioned, it was Christmas last week Saturday. We didn’t do anything special on Saturday. On Sunday we were invited to celebrate traditional Christmas at someone’s house. It was all the way on the border of Addis Ababa. Fortunate, it was very quit on the road so we arrived there quickly. There was a lot of food, which was very good. There even was a coffee ceremonie. The neighbourhood was a lot better than where we stay at. It’s a lot more quit and the air is very clean.

At this point we are very busy with finishing our work.

Welkom bij een van onze laatste blogs. Volgende week zaterdag verlaten we Ethiopië en zullen we het warm weer inruilen voor het koude weer in Nederland. De afgelopen 19 weken zijn heel snel voorbij gegaan. Christi gaat volgende week gelijk naar Nederland en Mary gaat nog wat landen in Afrika bezoeken.  Afgelopen weekend was het hier kerst. Aangezien ze in Ethiopië de orthodoxe kalender volgen.  We hebben het weekend leuk besteed.

Vorige week dinsdag hebben we een meeting gehad bij het entrepreneur development centre.  We hebben het centrum ingeschakeld om ons te helpen van cliënten te zoeken.  Het was een interessant gesprek.  We zijn te weten gekomen dat het centrum bedrijven training geeft en dat veel van hen wel hulp kunnen gebruiken. In hoeverre het centrum ons daadwerkelijk kan helpen is nog even afwachten. Na de afspraak zijn we naar onze favoriete hotel gegaan om te dineren. Het smaakte weer heerlijk. Christi had weer de pasta carbonara met kip besteld en Mary de gevulde kip met spinazie en kaas en rijst.

De afgelopen week zijn we behoorlijk teleurgesteld geraakt wat het eten betreft. We hadden in restaurants veel westerse eten besteld. We kunnen iedereen adviseren die naar Ethiopië komt.  Bestel in restaurants alleen traditioneel eten dat is het enige dat goed smaakt. Al het ander eten is  op z’n zachts gezegd “ze bakken er niks van”  Mocht je toch westers willen eten ga dan down town of naar hotels.

Afgelopen week was het de week voor kerst. Dat was ook te merken. Toen “onze” kerst was afgelopen toen kwam hier alle kerst decoratie.  Door de hele stad heen waren kraampjes die spullen goedkopere verkochten. Er was ook een bazar op Meskel square. Daar hebben wij een bezoekje aangebracht op vrijdag.  Het was druk maar ze hadden behoorlijk wat spullen te koop. We dachten bij onszelf waarom was dit niet in september. We zijn allebei met leren tassen naar huis gegaan. En nog wat andere dingen. Op de terug wilde we de metro uitproberen. Mary dacht dat ze in de metro de kaartjes kon kopen. Wij de trappen op gelopen toen kwamen er achter dat het beneden was. We hadden geen zin om weer de trappen op te lopen toen zijn we maar met de lijntaxi gegaan.

Het was behoorlijk druk op de weg. We hadden onze eind bestemming nog niet bereikt maar het was zo druk. Toen wilde chauffeur dat iedereen uit ging stappen. Niemand stapte uit om dat het te belachelijk was dat we  moesten uit stappen. Wij en andere mensen in de taxi zijden dat hij door moest gaan rijden.  Vervolgens had hij ons op een andere plek er uitgezet en eiste dat we gingen uitstappen.  Mary was boos en ging in discussie. De chauffeur zat ons uit te schelden. Christi bleef rustig tot de chauffeur “monkies” tegen ons zei en vervolgens op haar ging spugen.

Afgelopen zaterdag was het dus kerst. Op zaterdag hebben we niks bijzonders gedaan.  Op zondag waren we eten genodigd om traditioneel kerst te vieren.  Het was helemaal op de rand van Addis. Gelukkig was rustig op de weg en waren we er snel. De buurt waar we waren was met niks te vergelijken met waar wij verblijven. De buurt heeft veel ruimte was schoner en geen luchtvervuiling. Het kerst diner was geweldig, en we hebben ook het traditionele koffie ceremonie meegemaakt. Zo hebben we een beetje later maar als nog kerst kunnen vieren.

We zijn inmiddels druk bezig alles af te ronden.
