Update week 10

Hello everybody,

Here is a update of week 10. We are now halfway to the end. On Sunday we arrived safely in Addis Ababa. It was a big adventure.

Last Sunday we arrived late at Nairobi airport, because the taxi driver came late and because we asked him to stop at the KFC, which we shouldn’t have done. It also took us awhile at KFC, as they took our order wrong and it took a while for us to get our change back. At the airport the attendant said that we were late and that  we should arrived one hour earlier. However, she forced her co-worker to put our luggage in the plane, thankfully!. Within 10 minutes the issue was fixed. We were extremely lucky, because it was fairly quite so there were no ques anywhere.. On arrival in Addis Ababa, the driver was waiting for us and he was even friendly enough to stop at a shop so we could buy many bottles of water. The moment we arrived in Addis, Christi immediately said that she could smell that we were back because of the air pollution which always gives Christi a stuffed nose.

This week we had a meeting with our supervisor to discuss some elements and we managed to conduct a questionnaire in another class. Hopefully, coming week we will manage the rest of the classes. On Wednesday we heard the news of the results of the American election. Christi wanted to stay up with the neighbour to watch the election on TV, but she decided to stay in bed. Which eventually was a good thing, as the elections would’ve only give Christi heart palpitations lol. Mary didn’t care about the elections at all, so she stayed in bed as well. The new president was a good topic for conversations here in Addis, as many people were shocked about the results.  The disappointment even reached Addis Ababa.

This Friday we had gone with our neighbour to a nice Kenyan lady to do her hair. Mary asked her if the prices we paid for the souvenirs in Nairobi were fair. Maybe she shouldn’t have asked, because according to her we paid western prices (which is a lot btw). Mary also told her that she bought many hats at the Masai market and when she got in our apartment in Addis she found out that the hats have labels with “made in China”, whilst they insisted they were handmade. The lady said that at the moment Mary paid for her souvenirs, the man closed his stand and went home as he earned way more than the products were worth. There was no reason for him to continue working that day anymore.

Yesterday, Marieke spent her last weekend with us and Rhawa (student at Hope), as she is leaving next weekend. We used a driver who took us inside Addis Ababa. First we went to Entoto mountain, where we had a beautiful view of the city. The ride there wasn’t really comfortable. The road is very steep and the car wasn’t very capable at handling it. It was very quiet on the mountain, the air was very fresh and very clean. We took a lot of pictures. When we drove back down the mountain we came across a small shop which sells souvenirs. Afterwards we went to Shiro Meda, which is at the bottom of the mountain where many shops and stands are located. Many of these stands sell the same things, such as traditional clothing, bed covers, jewellery etc. When we were done walking around at Shiro Meda, we went to Churchill Road to buy more souvenirs. We know what you are thinking and yes you’re correct, we bought a lot of souvenirs lol.

Marieke and Christi are already worried how Mary is going to take all her souvenirs back to the Netherlands. Mary says she will manage and if it doesn’t fit she will make sure it does. After we were finished with buying souvenirs, we went to a traditional restaurant to eat injera with some delicious side dishes and a mixed platter of fries with spring rolls, meatballs, fish and beef. We finished the day with delicious ice cream from a shop that Rahwa recommended and afterwards we went to Ednamal to watch the new Marvel movie Dr. Strange, which we all loved. Little (awesome) spoiler for the people who love Marvel movies: Dr. Strange will also be in the newest Thor movie!

Luckily, the internet came back in our apartment. This week it was also quite cold. Not as cold as in the Netherlands, but still cold nevertheless especially at night. Today we are going to rest, read some books and maybe watch some movies.

Goedendag,

Hier is weer een update van alweer week 10, we zijn op de helft!  We hebben al veel beleefd en we hebben op onze terug reis naar Addis ook weer wat beleefd. We zouden om 3 uur vertrekken, maar de taxi was te laat. We hadden al afgesproken om naar de KFC te gaan. Dat hadden we beter niet kunnen doen. Bij de KFC hadden ze ons bestelling verkeerd opgenomen en het kostte veel tijd om die fout te herstellen.  Toen we bij de balie aankwamen was het grondpersoneel niet zo blij.  De stewardess zij jullie hadden eerder moeten komen maar het was rustig en ze had een medewerker gestuurd om onze koffers als nog het vliegtuig in te krijgen. We hadden heel veel geluk want er waren amper passagiers op de luchthaven en binnen 10 minuten was onze bagage geregeld. Deze keer stond de chauffeur netjes op ons te wachten. Hij was ook zo vriendelijk om met ons naar de supermarkt te gaan waar we weer een voorraad water hebben gekocht.  Toen we van de luchthaven naar huis reden  zei Christi dat ze meteen kon ruiken dat we  weer terug waren door de luchtvervuiling.

Het is ons ook niet ontkomen wie de nieuwe president van Amerika is geworden. Christi wilde vroeg op om de uitslag bij de buurvrouw te zien. Dromeland was toch leuker en achteraf gezien maar goed ook.  We hebben er veel over kunnen discussiëren met mensen op de compound en studenten.  Afgelopen week hebben weer een meeting gehad met onze supervisor en we hebben ook nog een enquête kunnen afnemen bij een klas.  Hopelijk kunnen we volgende week de ander vier klassen doen.

Het weekend was ontzettend gezellig. Vrijdag zijn we met de buurvrouw meegegaan naar een Keniaanse vrouw om haar haren te laten doen. Christi is overtuigd om haar daar ook te laten doen. Mary ging checken als de souvenirs die we hebben gekocht een goede prijs was en natuurlijk hebben we westerse prijzen betaald. Mary had ook verteld over een hoed die ze op de Masai markt had gekocht. De verkopers claimde dat de hoeden met de hand waren gemaakt. Ze waren alleen vergeten de label “made in China” uit te knippen. Helaas kwam Mary er achter toen we terug waren in Addis. De Keniaanse vrouw zei op het moment dat we hadden betaald was de verkoper naar huis gegaan omdat zijn buit binnen was. We hebben veel over ons Keniaanse avontuur kunnen lachen.

Aangezien het feit dat dit Marieke’s laatste weekend is in Addis Ababa. Hebben we gisteren  met Marieke en Rhawa de toerist uitgehangen. We hebben een chauffeur ingehuurd om ons kris kras door de stad heen te rijden. We hadden geluk dat er niet veel verkeer was en  we waren overal vrij snel. We begonnen de tour op Entoto mountain. Waar een prachtig uitzicht is over de stad. We waren op een mooie plek gestopt waar we uitzicht hadden om een minder bewoont gebied. Het was ontzettend rustig, schoon en geen luchtvervuiling. Daarna zijn we naar Chiromeda en Churchill road gegaan om souvenirs te kopen.  We zijn bijna klaar met souvenirs en we hebben aardig wat ingekocht. Marieke vraagt zich al af hoe Mary alles mee terug naar Nederland gaat nemen. Mary zegt dat ze er wel voor zorgt dat het past.  Na het winkelen zijn we naar een traditioneel restaurant gegaan waar we injera’s hebben gegeten en Christi had liever een gerecht zonder injera en had loempia met friet. Daarna heeft Rhawa ons meegenomen naar een plek waar heel goed ijs wordt verkocht We hebben de gezellig dag afgesloten met een ontzettend goede film Dr. Strange die we in Ednamall hebben gekeken.

Deze week hebben we minder last gehad van stroom uitvallen en het internet is weer werkende in ons appartement. Het weer was afgelopen week best fris voornamelijk s ’nacht. maar niet zo koud als in Nederland. Vandaag gaan we lekker rusten boek lezen en films kijken.
